Anonymous caricature depicting the treatment given to the Brunswick Manifesto by the French population, 1792

Library of Congress description: “Print shows four figures representing foreign nations responding unfavorably to the manifesto issued by the Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg on July 25 1792. A fifth figure representing Fame (an angel with trumpet) flies overhead holding a sign labeled ‘République Française’.” The Brunswick Manifesto was a proclamation issued by Charles William Ferdinand, Duke of Brunswick, commander of the Allied Army (principally Austrian and Prussian), on August 1st 1792 to the population of Paris, France during the French Revolutionary Wars.

The Brunswick Manifesto threatened that if the French royal family were harmed, then French civilians would be harmed. It was a measure intended to intimidate Paris, but rather helped further spur the increasingly radical French Revolution and finally led to the war between revolutionary France and counter-revolutionary monarchies.

A rare, early 18th century Memento Mori band gold known as a skeletal, as the whole length of the skeleton is employed on the outside of the hoop, with other emblems. The earliest known example is dated 1659. This ring is enamelled in black with a full skeleton, twin hearts for love and an hourglass, symbolic of the passage of time and the brevity of life.

Lieutenant-General Lord Cornwallis receiving as hostages the two sons of Tipu Sultan at the end of the Third Anglo-Mysore War, 1792.

The Third Anglo–Mysore War (1789–92) was a war in South India between the Kingdom of Mysore and the East India Company and its allies, including the Maratha Empire and the Nizam of Hyderabad.

At the end of the conflict, among the preliminary terms that Lord Cornwallis insisted on was the surrender the two sons of Tipu Sultan as hostages. This was a guarantee for his keeping to the peace agreement. On 26 February his two young sons were formally delivered to Cornwallis amid great ceremony and gun salutes by both sides.
